Time is rushing by..........Catch up - November.

I don't seem to have found time to get on this blog for quite a few months. Christmas came and went, and the New Year, and we are half way through February already.  I have knitted quite a bit lately.
At the beginning of November we had a new grandchild. A girl named Bea, she is beautiful, and the first grandchild to have dark hair.  Our lovely grandsons are all blond, as were my boys when babies.
I asked my Mum what colour my hair was when I was a baby and she can't remember!  Well it was a long time ago! Just over 60 actually, as I was 60 last November.
My long time friend, since we were 11 years old, Chris and
I went to Dublin for the weekend to celebrate our 60th
birthdays. Sadly our other friend Caro couldn't get away,
she had her own new Grandson to play with.
We had a great time, lots of sightseeing, and chats, coffee
 and chats, dinner and chats. In fact I think the only time
we stopped talking was when we were asleep.

Scarecrow Festival

Do other areas have Scarecrow Festivals I wonder?  I only got to the Bleadon one this year, although there are lots of others in North Somerset.





My brother picked my Mum and I up, but wouldn't say where we were going.  We had a lovely walk around, slowly for Mum, and after looking at the scarecrows, ended up in the Queen's Arms for a lovely cider.

Runner Bean Pickle

One thing all this rain is good for is growing the vegetables.  The runner beans are growing profusely, and by the time you have eaten as many as you can, and given loads away, you still have more than you can deal with, why not make the yummy runner bean pickle.  My Grandmother always made it, so did Mum, and each year I get the overwhelming urge to make it too.

Runner Bean Pickle

2lbs beans - ribbed and sliced
1 1/2lb onions - chopped
1 heaped tablespoon cornflour
1 tablespoon turmeric
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1lb demerara/soft brown sugar
1 1/2 pints vinegar.

Prepare the vegetables.
Cook beans until tender.
Cook onions in 1/2 pint vinegar
Mix dry ingredients into a smooth paste
with some vinegar.
Strain the beans, add the rest of vinegar and cook
for 10 mins.
Add sugar and other ingredients.
Boil further 10 mins.
Put in jars.

I like to add a couple of eating apples to
the recipe, which adds sweetness. But it is a personal choice.
Somerset never looks better than in the summer, but the name does mean Land of the Summer People.

We had our middle grandson staying at the end of July, and Somerset wasn't living up to it's name that week. Lots of rain. But we still had a great time. 
We went to Avon Valley Railway, and enjoyed a ride up and down the line.

They also had one of the Bristol gorilla's there.

Another wet day took us to Puxton Park, where Joe spent hours climbing and clambering over their huge play equipment.
We also had a day at Bath Races. It was glorious sunshine while we had our picnic, but halfway through down came the rain.  But we had a good time, and Joe had fun at his first experience of horse racing.

We also went to Horseworld one of our favourites.
 Joe hadn't been before and we fell in love with a horse called Ginger.  If only our back garden was a thousand times bigger!


He finished up with a ride on the Weston Wheel with Grandpop, and when given the choice of a trip on the Grand Pier or a Domino Pizza, amazingly the Pizza won!  Which probably saved me some money in the end.

Builth Wells, and a walk along the river to
the play park.
We had a lovely week with him, and
next time little brother will stay too.

Differences

I was thinking today about how different things are now compared with when I was a child living with my Grandmother. Well, considering that is over 50 years ago, they would be wouldn't they.
But I was really thinking about food, and what she used to grow and do with it.
My Grandfather was a great Gardener, he grew all their vegetables, soft fruit and loved to grow flowers, which he sold locally.

The garden was divided up into sections. As you opened the gate into it, the first part was like Aladdin's Cave, or so I thought as a child. On the right was a small shed that he used to kill the rabbits and chickens that he kept, so I don't remember ever going into there. Next on the left was a large shed, the size of a garage, full of old furniture and things that had been discarded over the years. My Grandparents lived in the house that had belonged to his parents, so had been in the family since it was built in the 1880's. I swear nothing had been thrown away, just out to the shed!

On the left side was a range of rabbit hutches that he bred the rabbits in, and sold them to the local butcher. I have never been able to eat rabbit, nor has my Mother, I remember choosing a smokey coloured rabbit and pretending he was mine, then coming back from holiday to find he had gone to the butcher's. Obviously I was so upset it has stayed with me for 55 years.

You then turned right and came to the hen house and the chickens, turned left and then it was a long path down to the bottom. Opposite the hen house, against the wall was a range of loganberries.
It seemed to me that the garden was from just past the hen house, as there was a honeysuckle arch that you walked through and there the garden stretched away for what looked like miles, but was probably about 130ft.
On the left you could walk through to a small lawn just behind the henhouse and rabbit hutches, and it was very small, just big enough for me to play on, then the soft fruit bushes of redcurrant and blackcurrents. Also rows of strawberry plants. One of my earliest memories is of sitting on a stool, helping Nanny to pick the currants. She used to make blackcurrent jam and redcurrant jelly.

The blackcurrant jam was often used to make what has been passed down through the family as Nan's remedy. She used to mix a spoonful with lemon juice, honey and hot water as a cure for colds. Doubt if it cures a cold but it does help to make you feel better. Nowadays I use blackcurrent squash in place of the jam. Still does the trick.

After the fruit came rows upon rows of flowers, then several rows of asparagus. Then it seemed as if the garden went into a third section marked by the rows of runner bean sticks. The other side of them came the veggies, cabbage, cauliflower, red cabbage, carrots, parsnips, swede, onions,
shallots, marrows and goodness knows what else.

Then at the bottom end of the garden there was a pig pen, although I can't remember any pigs ever being there when I was around, but apparently they used to keep a couple up until just after the war ended. Down this end was also huge rubarb patches.

Nan used to bottle the Loganberries and some of the currants, and the strawberries. She also used to bottle runner beans, carrots, and would make Marrow Pickle, Chow Chow, Pickled Onions, and Picallili. The Kilner jars used to be lined up on the shelves in the cupboard along with the jams and jellies. She probably would have loved to have a freezer, like we have nowadays to pile her bounty of fruit and veggies into.

Wedding Outfit Search

Getting a bit frenzied now, trying to find an outfit for 2nd son's wedding at Easter.
Gathered up Mother and went out to Wedmore in the search for something to wear. Saw lots of really expensive outfits that I would never wear again, so practicality burst in and I declined.

Not sure what to wear, think I may have to settle for something I got the other day, which I don't feel too sure about.

Finished up in Cheddar, and bought hubby a new fleece instead.

A lazy Sunday

Typical, a day off work and I wake up at 7am instead of a nice lie in.
Wide awake, and the sun is shining.
Sadly by mid-day the rain and hail had arrived.

Ian the builder called in to measure up the garden and give us a quote for paving.

10.30am Kim and Garry with little Louis came by for a coffee and to see the Garden Room that Garry designed for us. Almost finished after a saga of events.

Just as they were thinking of going, Carolyn and Bern came in, more coffee.

Everyone gone by 12.45. Hubby had a mystery shop to do, so has dashed off to town.

I'm catching up on Something for the Weekend TV show that I recorded this morning.

Sun is out again now, but too wet outside to attack the garden, shame as it really needs a massive attack. Looks awful after the build. I've got loads of bulbs to put in, but until I can clear the bushes back nowhere to put them yet.

Went to the theatre last night with hubby and saw a comedy play. Very good.
